Over a period of time, you start to accrue a variety of important documents. Important documents can build up and begin to take up an adequate amount of space in a home or apartment. In order to keep the documents safe and out of the way, many people choose to keep them in a storage unit. When storing items like deeds, family history, diplomas, photographs and keepsakes, there are some tips you can use to help ensure these items last a long time.
First, it’s important to choose a storage facility that you can trust. The security unit should be climate controlled since older material can be vulnerable to heat and moisture. By storing in a climate controlled unit it will help reduce the risk of damage. Beltline Security and StorAlls have become a trusted source for a variety of families who have special belongings they need to keep safe. Keep reading as we go through a few more tips.
Keep Your Documents Protected
When storing important documents that contain family history, it is important to keep them protected. In order to do this, you need to know how to store them. Your first step will be finding a box that is the right size to hold your items. It should be large enough for everything to fit inside comfortably and nothing should be folded. Next, you should search for a folder to put the documents into. A great rule of thumb here is to use vacuum-sealed or airtight packaging. These types of packaging will help to keep mold out. Airtight packaging is more expensive than other types of folders, but they are very efficient at keeping belongings safe.
Storage Techniques
So, you have your boxes filled with folders containing your family history and now it is time to place them in the storage unit. We recommend keeping the boxes raised off of the ground by using a tarp, wood pallets or cardboard. Be sure to only stack boxes if they are sturdy enough to hold one another. Place labels on the outside of each box that state what the box contains. This will make it easier for you when you go searching for something specific in the unit. If there is something that you know that you will need soon, be sure to store it near the front of the unit in an easy to reach the area.
