Packing Materials You Most Likely Already Own

A lot of unexpected costs come up when you’re making a big move, which is why it’s important to try and save some cash every chance you get! While you shouldn’t skimp on things like secure storage units or delicate movers, there are a few things that you can do to save a few dollars here and there. But before you grab your keys and head to the store to grab these great deals, slow down and realize you’ve already got these supplies right at home! Here are a few of our favorite packing materials that you most likely already own:

  1. Blankets

Yep, blankets. You’re used to bundling up in these for a movie night, but have you ever thought about using them as reusable packing peanuts? If you have a box with delicate items, like pottery, decorations and vases, you can use blankets to pad the inside of the box and keep your pieces from clanking together and scratching or shattering while you’re on the move. You can also place them between furniture items when storing them to prevent scratches or scuffs.

  2. Leftover Boxes

Do you shop online? Then it’s likely you have more than your fair share of boxes laying around. If you’re planning to move soon, start saving those boxes! Use the smaller ones to pack smaller items like accessories, jewelry and cutlery, and use the bigger ones for your other household items. You’d be surprised at how strong those boxes can be! And if you find that you need some more, we have you covered!

  3. Trash Bags

We’re not saying your stuff is trash, but it certainly could fit in a trash bag! Trash bags are a great way to transport your clothes without ever taking them off of the hanger. You can use the bag just like a suit bag, all you have to do is cut a hole in the top! Make sure to tie the bottom of the bag to keep things extra secure. This is a great alternative to expensive wardrobe boxes, and works almost the same way!

  4. Suitcases and Backpacks

Gather up all your travel gear! Suitcases, backpacks and duffle bags are a great way to take your stuff from one place to another without having to buy any new boxes. These items are a great way to transport clothes and other softlines, and can even be used for heavier items like books and shoes!

  5. Laundry Hampers

We all know how quickly a laundry hamper can fill up—and especially how it feels like you can never get to the bottom of it when you’re doing your chores! You’ll be grateful for your extra large laundry hamper when you’re making a move. Hampers can hold a lot, and they’re especially great for you as a mover because they come with handles and often times even on wheels! Talk about an easy move.

These are just a few of the ways you can use your household items to prepare for moving day. Now that you’re done reading—it’s time to get packing!
