Storing Valuable and Fragile Items

Storing Valuable and Fragile Items

Whether you are storing for a later time or moving to a different home, exactly how you pack your valuables and fragile items should be what you pay attention to most in the whole process. Packing things such as clothing or shoes is much easier than packing fragile items, this being due to the high level of care and attention to detail it requires. You do not want your grandmother’s antique plates moving around inside a box leading them to shatter to pieces!

There are plenty of ways to ensure that your fragile items do not get broken in the process of packing and storing them. This post will guide you in just a few of the ways to properly package and store your items.

Document everything

The first thing you should do before you even start packing away your valuables, document everything you have! It is important that you create a detailed inventory of everything you own and where that stuff gets packed and stored. This can be done in a number of ways, things such as taking pictures, creating detailed lists either written or on a computer, or by using an app on your smartphone.

Choose the right boxes

Size matters above most other things in dealing with box size and storing your valuable. It is of utter importance that you choose the right boxes for your fragile items. A large box filled with small, fragile items could easily lead to all of these small items crashing into each other and breaking into pieces. The best way to make sure you always have the right size box for a certain item, save the original box! By saving the original box, you are saving yourself from the risk of your item breaking because of the wrong box size.

Cardboard dividers

If you are trying to store various glassware, it could become a bit tricky with trying to keep them secured in the box. Items that are not secured could potentially rub together in the box, leading to breaks and chips in the glass. An easy solution to prevent this from happening would be to invest in some cardboard dividers or make them yourself! By having dividers, you enable the items to have room to breathe in the box, keeping them separated and unable to crash into one another. Boxes that already have dividers in them can be purchased from various stores.

Protective Padding

Besides have dividers, another way to keep your items safe and secure inside their respective boxes is by involving protective padding implemented in the packaging process. There are various types of padding that you could use to protect your valuables from breaking. You could use things such as bubble wrap, Styrofoam padding, and Polystyrene filler as a way to keep your items from shifting within their box. If you do not have any of these types of padding, you can get creative and use household items like towels, sheets, blankets, or pillows as a top-of-the-box filler.
