Tips for Storing Outdoor Gear

With summer near, you need that extra space to organize that outdoor gear! Outdoor gear can be cumbersome and bulky so you might find that your garage or shed is not enough storage. By renting a storage unit, you will not only protect your gear, but extend its warranty by keeping it safe from the elements, animals and extreme weather temperatures, while also preventing corrosion. Any winter gear, such as skis, are also perfect for storing in one of our units. Beltline and Security Stor-Alls are here to help you make space for everything.

Keep It Dry and Clean

Before storing your gear away, always make sure to allow it to dry first thoroughly. Clean it out using mild soap and water and get rid of any bugs or webs to prevent further infestations. Always protect your gear using waterproof covers to prevent moisture, dust and mold build-up.

Use a Rack for Mounting

Secure bikes, kayaks, fishing rods, mounting gear, climbing, skiing and hunting supplies, on racks to save space and protect items. You can also add a suspension system on the roof of the unit to keep small boats off the ground. This will help keep your gear snug, decompress items, and prevent items from falling, while also making it easy to access and detach for later use. If you do not have a rack, lay heavy objects against the walls of the storage unit. For small boats, use one end of the ship to lean it against the wall. For paddle boats, lean it against the sides.

Use Storage Containers for Smaller Items

Storage containers are great for smaller outdoor items such as backpacks, shoes, first-aid kits, lamps, go-pros and safety gear. Like always, label everything accordingly and separate items into categories if possible.

Roll Up Tents

Never fold your tent because it can lose its shape and tear up the fabric. Spot clean and roll it up properly, then store back in its sack. You can also hang any sleeping bags with hangers so that the insulation stays intact. The more you keep your gear off the floor and in a hanging system, the better your items will be protected from wear and tear.

Keep Flammable Items Away

Things like propane tanks and gasoline can cause hazardous fires. Such combustible liquids are flammable and should not be stored in the unit because of temperatures and sensitive material from your gear. So keep caps closed at all times and dispose or store of liquids properly according to labels.
