So, you’ve got a self-storage unit. What’s next?
Your storage unit space is pretty customizable when it comes to organization — you can make it as organized (or unorganized) as you want it to be. From our years working in this industry, we’ve learned a lot of helpful tips and tricks for making it more on the organized end of things. Here’s a few helpful hints for first-time storage unit owners to keep in mind as they begin to fill their unit:
Labeling your boxes is CRUCIAL when it comes to your storage unit. Not only will it remind you of what is fragile and what isn’t, but when you need to retrieve items you won’t be stuck digging in mystery boxes for what feels like hours. Write what’s inside the box on one side of the box, or if you’re feeling extra organized, do it on all four! It seems obvious, but trust us — this is one part of packing that people think they can go without, when really it’s a necessity.
Will you be storing any items that need to be kept above or below a certain temperature? It’s time to check! If you do plan on storing these kinds of items, then it’s important to make sure you’re putting them in a climate-controlled unit. These units will keep your items safe from any potential damage that could occur from hot or cold temperatures.
If you’re going to be heading to your storage unit pretty frequently to grab your belongings, then we recommend making your unit into a “map” of sorts with the most used items towards the entry. By placing your most-needed items towards the front of your unit, you’ll be able to access them quickly and easily whenever you pop by. This will save you time and save you from making your unit a mess by digging through boxes!
AOnce you have everything labeled and mapped out in your unit, write it all down on a list that lives in your unit, at home or on your computer! By doing this, you will always know for certain where everything is and can locate it when the time comes. Plus, it helps to remind you of any of the smaller items you may forget about as time goes on.
Your items will be staying in your unit for an extended period of time, so it’s important to make sure that you’re stacking them wisely! Stack your heaviest items at the bottom, and let your lighter items round out the top. By doing this you’ll ensure that your items won’t shift or move as they’re in storage. You wouldn’t want to reopen your storage unit and realize that because of your stacking errors that piles and piles of boxes had fallen down!
Hopefully these tips will help you as you prepare to fill your first storage unit! While they might seem simple, our customers over the years have shown that these tips are extremely effective when it comes to organizing their units.
