What Supplies Do You Need When Moving

You have taken the leap, purchased a house and now you're ready to move, but don’t know where or how to move your belongings to the new space. Moving can easily become overwhelming if not prepared for ahead of time. To establish what moving supplies will be needed, view the list of supplies below to see what can help make your big day run smoothly.

Re-pack Appliances

If you have kept any boxes from purchasing a kitchen appliance or a TV, items like this can easily be re-packed into their original boxes and are quickly “move-out ready”. The more pieces that can be re-packed, the easier packing and unpacking will seem.

Boxes

Boxes, boxes and more boxes! All sizes, big and small, will be needed for packing. These can be purchased at our storage offices. Always purchase more boxes than you expect! There is usually a junk drawer or a crowded shelf that has been forgotten about. For glassware and bottles, visit the local liquor store and inquire for any leftover liquor boxes with dividers still in them. The divider protects fragile items from banging into each other.

Protective Material

It is necessary to have protective material ready to wrap fragile items before they are placed in the boxes. If conserving space is most important for you, consider using sweatshirts, t-shirts or blankets to wrap. This allows for packing and protection simultaneously. However, if organization and an easier time unpacking is more important, packing peanuts or bubble wrap would be a better investment for your move!

Packing Tape

After all of the boxes have been packed and are ready for transport, tape is needed to seal the top and bottom to ensure nothing falls out! The last thing you need is for a box to be knocked over and spilled in the middle of moving day.

Sharpies

Once boxes have been loaded in the moving van, it is impossible to tell them apart. Use sharpies or markers to label what room the box needs to be taken to in the new home. Plan ahead and strategically pack items together that will go in the same room. This saves time in the unpacking process and prevents you from carrying boxes all over the house to reorganize.

Gloves

Protection is needed, not only for possessions, but also for you. Moving is a lot of labor with intensive work and can take its toll on your hands. In some cases, blisters may form from the constant motion of lifting boxes. We recommend protecting your hands by investing in a pair of work gloves.

Felt Pads

Large furniture does not always need to be lifted throughout the home. Felt pads make it easy to slide large pieces throughout a home. This method is most effective on hardwood floors to prevent scratching, but can also help on thin carpet.
