Tips for Packing a Moving Truck

Tips for Packing a Moving Truck

Planning to move can be quite a hassle, especially if you are moving at the last minute or are overwhelmed with bulky items not knowing if they will fit into the moving truck or U-haul. The goal is to pack effectively to maintain your items safe while also having the comfort of driving with free space. Need some tips to get started?

Always Use Cardboard Boxes
This may seem obvious, but using cardboard moving boxes is the ideal way to store loose items. At Stor-Alls, we have all different sizes for you to choose from. You want to avoid using bags and instead take those with you in your vehicle. With that being said, always separate smaller and bigger boxes. Once piled on top of one another by size, the boxes will have a less likely chance of tipping over while in transit.

Avoid Overload
Depending on the size of the moving truck, you may be glad to know there is enough room for all your belongings. However, if you underestimate the size and weight capacity, you may find yourself sticking things in your car where they do not belong which is a safety concern. Make sure you get an estimate beforehand to see which size moving truck or U-haul is best. Another tip to prevent unstable packing is to use the rule of thumb for heavy items- large heavy items belong in the back of the trunk, couches and mattresses on the sides and smaller heavier items in the front for easy access and unload.

Disassemble Material If Possible
If you are in a hurry to move, grabbing an item at arm’s reach and loading the truck might seem convenient. However, you run the risk of breaking and denting material once it is in the moving truck. Running into potholes and bumpy roads until you reach your final destination is bound to happen. This can cause a few items to collapse, shift or break along the way. To avoid this, disassemble material and packaging in original boxes. Always use coverings or bubble wrap for extra protection for breakable items.

Use Moving Supplies for Extra Support
Unless you have a helper to completely lift furniture off the floor without dragging table legs, using a dolly is great for easier and safer access to and from your place. You can also stack boxes on the dolly to save you time and energy for carrying the bigger pieces. Packing tape and moving blankets work as an extra layer of protection. Lastly, never run the risk of leaving items as-is, you want your trip to go as smoothly as possible.
