Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Storage Unit

Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Storage Unit

Spring is here and that means it’s time for some Spring cleaning! One of the places we often forget to clean and organize this time of year is our storage units. If your storage unit is short-term or doesn’t have much in it, you might not need to do much. However, if your storage unit is quite full or you’ve had it for a long time, it’s a good idea to do a little cleanout.
Here are a few tips and tricks on how to get your storage unit nice and clean.

Donate, Sell and Recycle

If your storage unit has been sitting for over a year, there’s a chance you have items you don’t use, won’t use or can’t use. Sort through your belongings and get rid of what you can.

For things that are in good condition or are worth a chunk of change, try selling them on places like eBay, Etsy or Facebook Marketplace. You might bring in some cash for things you never use.

For items not worth much, consider donating them to your local donation center. Clothes and household items are always in high demand. Not only will you be keeping these items out of landfills, but you will be helping your local community. If an item is not in good shape to be donated, check and see if it’s recyclable before tossing it in the trash.

Get Organized with Labels

Once you’ve cleaned out the clutter, it’s time to get organized. Sort items into large waterproof bins and boxes to keep them safe and clean. Adding shelves to your storage unit can give you more room to store things and it will help you stay organized. Adding labels to your boxes with the contents written on them is another great way to ensure you always know where things are.

Keep it Clean & Make a System

You’ve decluttered, you’ve organized and now it’s time to clean up and keep it clean. Storage units don’t usually get very dirty so a quick dusting and sweeping of the floor should do.

To keep it clean going forward, do a quick dusting every few months. It’s also smart to make yourself a system. If you store items you get to on a regular basis like holiday decor, put those items towards the front. Keep other items you won’t be accessing near the back. Making an inventory sheet of your storage unit can be helpful too.
